Using the examplar double page spreads that I found on the internet, I have created my own plan for my article. When I asked my audience what they would like to feature on an article, a 'Need To Know' section was mentioned as it was seen on a Kerrang article page, and so I will add this into the bottom of my article.

These are the three examples of articles from Q, NME and Kerrang! that I gave my target audience to pick from. It was a unanimous decision with all 20 people I asked choosing the Kerrang! article and so this is the style and layout I will model my article on. A few however commented on how they thought the 'Need To Know' section on the NME article was interesting and so I will use this as well on my article.

Before I begin to construct my article for my magazine I need to decide on a layout. I have printed out 3 different styles of articles from Kerrang!, NME and Q and will ask 20 people which they prefer and which would be best suited to my front cover and contents page. From then I can build a layout for my article and begin piecing it together.

I forgot to upload this image on Wednesday but this is my contents page so far. The second image on the page is of me and Zach Phelps (solo artist). I decided to use this picture and create a feature on 'Fans With Their Idols' to make my magazine more fan orientated. The image also contrasts the other two on the page because its more casual and wasn't set up as a photoshoot.

Another Photoshoot

During the half-term week I have been gathering pictures I can use on my contents page. I realised I would probably need to do another photoshoot with a girl as my previous two photoshoots are with boys and I want to attract both a male and female audience. It was sort of last minute but I organised a photoshoot with a girl yesterday and used a white sheet as the back drop for the pictures. I dressed her in tights, shorts and we swapped various different tops. One of them being a Ramones one. I wanted to give her a young, fresh look about her and the Ramones t-shirt showed she wasn't just into pop music. I got her to do lots of different poses including pushing her hair up, sitting on the floor with crossed legs and hands on hips. I'm pleased with the outcome of the photoshoot.

After asking 12 people their opinion on which style of contents page would best suit my magazine according to my cover, 5 people chose NME, 5 people chose Q and 2 people chose Kerrang! So therefore I am going to structure my contents page in the style of both NME and Q.

I am currently piecing together different elements of my contents page and deciding on the different articles that will be included in my magazine. I have decided to print off a contents page from 3 different magazines that would be my main competition in the market: Q, NME and Kerrang! I have then printed off my final front cover and I am going to ask a selection of people which contents style they think matches my front cover the most. I will then use this as a template for my own contents page.

Yesterday I asked 10 boys and 10 girls if they preferred the cover which used the pink/red colour or the one with the blue. To my surprise, 7 boys chose the pink and 3 chose blue. I thought most males wouldn't pick pink because it is seen as quite a feminine colour but this was not the case. All of the girls also picked pink and so this is the colour of cover I will use as my final piece as it will appeal to both genders which is what I wanted to achieve.

This is my finished front cover but with the two different colours. Today I am going to a print a copy of each out and ask 10 boys and 10 girls which cover they prefer.

More Pictures

I've been thinking ahead to when I need to do my contents page and I've realised I'm going to need more pictures than the ones I've got. I've decided to organise another photoshoot in the next couple of weeks and I want it to be with a girl because both of my other photoshoots were with just males.

Colouring

I am currently finishing the cover of my music magazine. I have used predominantly the colours, black, white, grey and a dark pink. I think the colour and shade of pink isn't too girly and it's quite a warm and inviting colour. However, having asked a couple of male friends if they would buy my magazine they said they may be put off a bit because of the pink. Because of this I have decided to make two covers, exactly the same but the second one using a darker blue instead of pink. I will then print copies of them out and ask 10 males and 10 females which cover they prefer. I want my magazine to not predominantly be aimed at men like most music magazines already published are and so I'm trying to accommodate for both genders' preferences.

I decided to use the first font I tried for the title of my music magazine. I wanted to use one that was completely different to the simple style of the rest of the magazine. The title is completely the opposite to the plain text and it makes it stand out more. The name of the font style I used is 'Dirty' and it gives it quite a raw edge which I want to reflect on the magazine. I want the articles within the magazine to give off the impression it is raw and the interviews are honest and most informative.

I need to focus on more blogging the smaller steps I make while creating my magazine.

Draft - Front Cover

This is the draft of the front cover of my magazine. I realised that the original colouring in this image would limit the colour I can use for my text and so that is why I decided to change the image to black and white. I used urban fonts to get the font for my title however I am not certain this is the exact font type I want to use. The "+" section in the bottom right hand corner that has a list of other solo artists will give the readers and indication of the type of music and the artists included in my magazine. This will be one of the main factors that would make the reader choose to buy magazine or another.
